| SPOTLIGHT
ON THE LIBRARY |
| JULY
29,
2005
The last few weeks have been very busy here at the Library. We have
celebrated the Great Wellsville Balloon Rally, opened our annual book
sale, enjoyed the adult and children’s summer reading programs and endured
the roaring heat of summer. Needless to say it has been exciting. However,
the summer is not yet over. One week still remains of the summer reading
programs. The book sale will continue until Friday, August 26 and the
Library will be offering a creative writing workshop by fiction author and
poet, Susannah Risley.
It is hard to believe that the sixth and final week of the summer
reading programs is upon us. The number of participants in both the adult
and children’s programs has been fantastic. In the adult program, we have
had three more winners for the weekly prize drawings. Charlene White,
Barbara Savins and Paul Honti have all claimed gift certificates to local
businesses. The library would like to thank Tami’s Floral Expressions,
Beef Haus Restaurant and Hamilton Shoes for their generous gifts.
In the children’s program we have had 253 participants. Ninety-six
participants have been listeners that attend the library for story hour
and activities. One hundred twenty-nine participants have been readers
that check out books to read at home and twenty-eight participants have
been young adults from Wellsville High School. It is very moving and
rewarding to see how much the youth of Wellsville enjoys reading. Lois
Bulger, our children’s librarian states, "We feel that the program was a
great success and applaud both the children and their parents or
caretakers for a job well done." |

| The Library’s annual
book sale has been extended to Friday, August 26. Patrons may purchase
used books from the sale during regular library hours. Hardcover books are
one dollar and paperback books are fifty cents. Beginning Monday, August
15 book sale customers may take as many books as they can carry for one
dollar. We have an abundant amount of books we must sell this summer, so
please hurry in and buy, buy, buy! A creative writing workshop, WRITING
FROM YOUR MEMORIES, will held at the Library on Friday, August 26 at 6 pm.
Susannah Risley, a fiction writer and poet from Schenectady, will
facilitate the two-hour program. She will read a short piece of her work,
discuss memoir writing, and give a fun exercise geared to access a
specific early memory. Participants will use their recollection to write.
Everyone is invited to attend this free workshop. You do not need writing
experience.
Ms. Risley has had short stories published in national magazines and is
the recipient of a James A. Mitchener Award for a novel in progress. She
has taught workshops in Libraries across the state, community centers and
homeless shelters. She also works in arts-in-education in schools. This
workshop is funded in part by Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it has
received from the NY State Council on the Arts.
