Are you a bargain hunter? Do you clip coupons, comparison shop or try to find the best deals online? Here’s an insider’s tip – a library card saves you money. With it, you can borrow all types of materials and access information free of charge.

Did you know you can borrow videos and DVDs for four days and there is no fee? Check out the latest adventure flick, foreign film, children’s movie or HBO drama. You can choose from about 4,000 titles.

Want high-speed Internet access? Use your library card to log on to one of the library’s computers. We have upgraded five of the ten public computers and the service is even quicker. Now you can visit your favorite website or check your e-mail with greater ease. We will soon add two more express computers.

Do you find what you need when searching the Internet? If you want reliable information with none of those annoying popup ads, try NOVEL (New York Online Virtual Electronic Library). Using your library card, you can access twelve specialized databases. You can find the links by clicking on the web databases button on our website, www.davidahowelibrary.org. The following are three of the databases that provide valuable information.

Are you looking for a magazine article or a book review? EBSCO Host MasterFile Select provides full text from over 750 periodicals. It covers a variety of general reference subjects.

What are your chances of having a heart attack? What is your body mass index? Check out the health assessment tools in the Health & Wellness Resource Center. This database gives medical information such as a drug and herb finder, alternative health material and medical reference resources.

Is lightning found on other planets? Is a polar bear really white? Searchasaurus is designed for elementary students. The home page is a treasure map. Click on fun facts, animal information, pictures or an encyclopedia.

Access one of these databases with your library card.

From the comfort of your home or office computer, you can access STARCAT, the online card catalog. Using your library card, you can view your account, renew materials or reserve books 24/7.

Using your library card, you can borrow educational software and games for your home computer. Ask about them at the children’s section desk.

If you purchase a book, magazine subscription, DVD, software or audiobook, it will cost you about $25 for each item. Your Internet costs at home can add up. The best bargain around is a library card. The more you use it, the more you save.
