SPOTLIGHT ON THE LIBRARY

The Friends of the Library is currently conducting the annual membership drive. Here are some frequently asked questions about the Friends.

Question: Who are the Friends?

Answer: The Friends of the Library is an auxiliary group of volunteers who assist the library.

Question: What is the purpose of the Friends?

Answer: According to the articles of incorporation, the Friends exist "to focus public attention to the library; to stimulate the use of the library’s resources and services; to receive and encourage gifts, endowments and bequests to the library; to support and cooperate with the library in developing library services and facilities for the community; to interpret the library’s needs to the public and to local governing bodies; to coordinate the activities of persons and groups interested in books and the library; to stimulate the gift of books and other desirable materials to the library; to enrich the cultural opportunities available to the persons by the David A. Howe Public Library."

Question: What are the Friends currently doing to help the library?

Answer: The major activity of the Friends is sponsoring the membership/fundraising drive. They have earmarked $6,900 to support library programs and services in 2004. They have budgeted $5,900 to buy new books, videos/DVDs and music CDs. The Friends have given $200 for the summer reading program for adults. They have designated $800 for the children’s summer reading program and story times offered throughout the year. The Friends sponsor the annual tree trim, refreshments and visit from Santa.

Question: How do I join the Friends?

Answer: A contribution automatically gives you membership in the Friends. You may write a check to Howe Library – Friends’ Account. Any size donation is welcomed. Your gift is tax deductible.

Question: What are the future plans for the Friends?

Answer: The Friends plan to reorganize and revitalize the group to give more opportunities to the community. There are many talented and skilled people who may wish to help with specific projects. The Friends plan to identify the library’s needs and request volunteers.
