2003
Summer time means a lot of things to many people—camping, barbecues
outside, swimming in the pool—and at the David A. Howe Public Library
summer means the Summer Reading Program will be under way soon. Anyone
from ages 3 to 103 can participate in the free program from June 30th
through August 8th. Come to the library and prepare to be
rewarded for reading!
The children’s section of the David A. Howe Library presents its
annual Summer Reading Program, Camp Read-A-Lot Adventures. This reading
program promotes the New York State theme of Picture This, Imagine That…Read
in its goal to register one million children for the summer of 2003.
Children from age 3 up to those entering 8th grade in the
fall may sign up from Thursday June 19th through June 27th
2003 in person to receive their Summer Reading packets. |

| There are three
different programs for different age groups in the children’s section
to make sure everyone has a good time at Camp Read-A-Lot! The Listener
group includes children from age 3 up until about 6 years old and the
Reader group will be for children up until 11 years old. Listeners and
Readers will be spinning the wheel every week for 6 weeks to determine
the number of picture books that Listeners will have read to them, or
what kind of packet of books Readers will take home. There are prizes to
spin for every week, and children who come for 4 or more weeks will be
eligible for entry in the final major prizes drawing as well as the
READO (reading bingo) prize drawing. Everyone’s a winner when they
come to the library and participate in the Summer Reading Program. There
are no scheduled days or times to come—participants are welcome to
come Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday from 10 am to 5 pm. Story
times, activities, and a party are all planned to add to the fun, so
check the schedule in your registration packet and posted in the
children’s section to see what day of the week you want to come.
There is a separate program planned for kids who will be entering 6th,
7th, and 8th grade in the fall. It’s so simple
to participate. All you have to do is mark your attendance when you come
in every week, read books and mark down the titles on your Official
Reading List, and the best part is filling out entry forms for the books
you read to be entered in the weekly drawing for a ten dollar gift
certificate from Kmart.

Reading
should be a little more exciting for adults this summer if they
participate in their own Summer Reading Program, Read To Win. Entry forms
for books read can be filled out for weekly drawings of $25 gift
certificates from local merchants. The more entries made, the better the
chances are of being a winner for the six weeks of the program.
Through the generous support of the Friends of the Library, these free
programs are available to everyone. Call the library at 585-593-3410 with
any questions.
