WHERE THE PAST MEETS THE FUTURE

SPOTLIGHT ON THE LIBRARY
MAY 12, 2003

With warm weather here and summer right around the corner, fitness and sports are on many people’s minds. It can be hard to stick to fitness routines or to know what would be really effective for your needs. The David A. Howe Public Library can help you by providing a number of materials on physical fitness and sports to jump-start your summer. Since May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, we would like to invite you in to the library to check out the books and videos that answer the how and why of sports and fitness.

The Best Sports Writing 2002 (796 BES)

Various writers from all kinds of publications have had their features on sports compiled for this engrossing overview of sports in America. With articles ranging from boxing to extreme backyard wrestling, there’s a little something for everyone. The style is engaging and fascinating, as the reader is shown the lives and minds of athletes and why they do what they do.

Sports: The Complete Visual Reference (Q796 SPO)

After looking through this book, anyone would have a better idea of what it takes to engage in almost any kind of sport. This reference tool contains information, presented mostly through pictures, photos, and diagrams about the techniques, equipment, terrain or arena, and champions in the field. This book gives a unique look at the world of sports. Browse through the sections on track and field or person-to-person combat, or learn about technique breakdowns with the step-by-step illustrations in each section to understand the object of the game and the way to win. Whether you’re a beginner or a sports enthusiast, this book has information to interest anyone.

The American Physical Therapy Association Book of Body Maintenance and Repair (Q613.7 MOF)

Aches and pains are a part of life that the American Physical Therapy Association wants to help people subdue and overcome. Some problems are the result of bad posture or ill-fitting shoes, and some occur when you aren’t properly warmed up for activity. In three parts—sections about the body, trouble-shooting potential problems, and exercises for strength, endurance, and flexibility—this book will help you create a stronger, pain-free body for everyday life and exercising.

Videos can do more than entertain you on a Friday night. The library has a great collection of "how to" videos that are perfect for busy people without the time to commit to a regular class or the money to join a gym. Popular items like Tae Bo 8-Minute Workout (HO 163), Weekly Workout: Based on the Techniques of Joseph Pilates (HO 173), and Yoga Journal’s Yoga for Beginners (HO 160) can help you stay fit at home.
