| SPOTLIGHT
ON THE LIBRARY |
DECEMBER 14, 2002
Shopping, decorating, eating, family time…While it is one of the
most anticipated times of year, the holiday season is also one of the
busiest times of year for most of us! I think sometimes we all need to
get the chance to remember what we really enjoy about this time of year.
The David A. Howe Library has a wide offering of things for you to take
home that will help you whip up some good, old-fashioned holiday spirit!
If you’re looking for new ideas, or want to relive something special
from your past the library can be a one-place stop for you.
Many families look forward all year to the special holiday foods that
are only made for this occasion. Camille Glenn’s Old-Fashioned
Christmas Cookbook (641.568 GLE) is packed with ideas for holiday
meals from drinks and appetizers to desserts. The cookbook is set up
with recipes grouped together to form menus for complete meals like,
"A Christmas Luncheon" and "Christmas Day Dinners".
Conversational notes on different recipes and ingredients make the book
something to browse and read, not just use to follow a recipe.

| Ultimate Christmas (q745.594 NEW) is
what the name implies, a Christmas book with a little something for
everyone in its pages. Jane Newdick takes you through the aspects of
preparing for the holidays with chapters starting with tree decorating
and making wreaths and other home displays to creating unique and
specially wrapped gifts. The dining room is not forgotten with setting
arrangements and recipes with many themes. Step-by-step instructions
mean that anyone who wants to try their hand at decorating at home doesn’t
need to be Martha Stewart to be successful.
An Old-Fashioned Christmas (q394.268 CUR) will take you back
in time through the Christmas traditions of various times and places in
America. The photographs and descriptions are based on history past and
present, showing places that are tourist destinations at holiday time.
Looking at this book is like taking a trip to Colonial Williamsburg and
Conner Prairie Settlement in Noblesville, Indiana, among others. With
the recipes in the book you can really make these Christmas traditions
seem real.
Warm Christmas memories are often triggered by hearing a familiar
song or watching a favorite movie. The David A. Howe Library has a
variety of entertainment options for any time and the holiday season is
no exception! It’s easy to liven up the mood at your house by playing
some carols and Christmas songs on the Boston Pops Orchestra’s Holiday
Pops (P 82) CD—among others at the library. Watching one of those
old, or new Christmas classic movies like It’s A Wonderful Life
(M 1102), How the Grinch Stole Christmas (M 1828), or The
Santa Clause (M 1359) can be a great way to spend a snowy night
during Christmas break.
