SPOTLIGHT ON THE LIBRARY
 JUNE 11, 2002

Kids and parents of kids, that time of year is just around the proverbial corner. You know, entire days of waking up without an alarm clock, catching up on all of those enchanting day-time television programs, feeling like it’s too hot to move one step from the couch. If this isn’t an ideal picture for your next three months, the David A. Howe Library and Lois Bulger, the Children’s Librarian, have an alternative to offer you. The New York State Summer Reading Program for 2002 is entitled "Splish, Splash, Read!" and will be going on June 24th through August 2nd. There’ll be no better way to cool off this summer for children pre-K through eighth grade than signing up to join in the fun.

So, here are the details of how Summer Reading works, for all of those parents and children who are interested in participating in "Splish, Splash, Read!" There are three categories of participation so your pre-kindergarten listener, kindergarten through fifth grade reader, and sixth through eighth grade young adult should plan to pre-register for this free program at the library starting at 10 am June 13th through the 21st to get their information packets. During the six weeks that Summer Reading lasts, participants are asked to visit the library with a parent at least once a week to sign in for attendance and to spin the Wheel or enter their reading drawing forms. Both listeners and readers have the chance to spin the Wheel for book types and numbers as well as for prizes—yes prizes—from the treasure chests!

This "Spotlight on the Library" article was written by library staff writer, Emily Barney. Articles are written and published monthly in the Wellsville Daily Reporter.

Any participant who attends at least four weeks of Summer Reading is eligible for the random drawing of a variety of fabulous prizes at the end of the program.
A new feature of Summer Reading this year is the Youth category. Young adults will receive a reading log form when they register to keep a record of their reading during the program. When sixth through eighth graders attend Summer Reading each week and fill out book entry forms, they will be entered in a separate drawing for gift certificates from local merchants. So, come on in to the library and take a chance on getting a little extra spending money for the summer months!

What would summertime be without fun activities? It would be boring, so the Children’s staff has planned on some different things to keep the weeks moving along. Summer Reading participants will have Bubble Gum Mondays and Sticker Fridays as well the chance to explore their creativity on Thursdays with crafts from 10 until 2 pm during the weeks of the Summer Reading program. Family Storytime is open to kids and parents who would like Mrs. Bulger to entertain them on Tuesdays from 11 to 11:30 am.

For all of those adults out there, including myself, who think that Summer Reading shouldn’t be just for kids, you’re right. The David A. Howe Library doesn’t think it should be, either. While the kids are spinning the Wheel and entering drawings for prizes, adults can enter book entry forms into drawings for great gift certificates from local merchants from June 24th through August 2nd. The Friends of the Library have again come through for every age group this summer with these wonderful prizes for Summer Reading. So, whatever your age or reading interest, get into the library and dive into Summer Reading.
