| SPOTLIGHT
ON THE LIBRARY |
| APRIL
2, 2002
I am a crag-laden mountain, known by many
names. I am courage, ardor, snaggle-toothed raw power. I cause your head
to spin and your knees to buckle as you peer at my peaks and climb to my
summits. I know you and your desire to dangle from my precipices with
nothing to keep me from crushing you but some rope and the worn, groping
flesh of your fingers and toes.
Others know you too. The raging river knows
you. It churns your insides and like a wild bull it bucks you as you
careen through its rapids, white knuckles gripping splintery oars. The
river knows your dreams to tackle the rock-hewn waters with nothing to
keep it from swallowing you whole but a plank of wood or sheet of
plastic you call kayak.
The deep sky knows you. It drags you through
invisible currents, bounces you from cloud to blue, and sucks the breath
from your stinging lungs. You hang on its whims with nothing to keep it
from dropping you but some jangling buckles and straps and a puff of
nylon parachute. We know you and your adventurous, fear-driven thrill
seeking. Do you know us? You should, if you hope to survive. |
